Buying Gold Bullion

1

Buying gold bullion is smart for an investor because it is cheaper than it has been in a long while and it is also easier to come by than it once was. It is also one of the safest ways to own your own gold. While you are likely familiar with what gold is you may not be familiar with the term “bullion.” Let us take a look at what gold bullion is all about.

The simplest way to explain gold bullion is to say that it is a valuable precious metal which is either gold or silver. Gold bullion comes in two main forms- there are gold bullion bars and gold bullion coins. It is gold bullion simply because the value of it comers entirely from the precious metal that makes up its content.

For a little bit of etymology, the word “bullion” is a French word that possibly comes from one of these three words- bouillon (which means boiling), buillun (cauldron) or bille (medieval ingot). While all three of these French words are related it is not clear which one gold bullion is named after.

If buying gold bullion is something you have on your mind these days then it is not a difficult task as it once was. Let us look at gold bullion coins first. These coins trade very close to the price of gold on the world market but it is worth pointing out that you will still be required to pay a premium of around eight percent if you buy a small amount and around four percent if you buy a larger amount. When you decide to sell gold buillion coins to a dealer you can expect to suffer a loss of an estimated four to eight percent discount (which was similar to when you bought them).

Gold bullion bars come in a selection of sizes. These can be purchased from private suppliers for your own collection. In most cases you will pay dealing costs that are on par with what you would pay if you bought gold bullion coins.

If you think buying gold bullion, whether it be coins, bars or both is something you would like to do then it is wise to first be a shrewd researcher and find out everything you can about this precious metal. One thing worth finding out more about is the advantages and disadvantages of the variety of ways in which gold can be purchased. The Internet is an excellent place to begin your search for gold bullion know-how.
